Specialized Medium Range Weather Forecasting Center

Pakistan Meteorological Department has initiated the step to enhance weather forecasting and warning capabilities with the help of JICA/Government of Japan. Under the project “Establishment of Specialized Medium Range weather Forecasting Centre (SMRFC) and Strengthening of Weather Forecasting System in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan” sponsored by JICA, installation of weather radar and a Wind Profiler system, High Performance Computing Cluster system has been installed at PMD Islamabad. The main objective of this project is to make available medium range weather forecasts (country wide, 3-10 days) using higher performance computing system. It will be capable for timely dissemination of accurate severe weather forecast and warnings to the vulnerable districts/communities of Pakistan. It will also be able to measure highly accurate rainfall intensity and to detect the weather situation.

7 Days Forecast

    Description

  • The Global Forecast System (GFS) is a global numerical weather prediction model run by NOAA. It produces a short-medium range weather forecast for 3-7 days. GFS operates daily at 00UTC on a horizontal resolution of 25km .
  • The US Air Force’s 557th Weather Wing creates the Global Ensemble Prediction Suite (GEPS) twice per day by ingesting 63 global forecast model runs produced by three operational numerical modeling centers and creating tailored statistical ensemble forecasts. Products include probabilities for precipitation and snowfall, and means/standard deviations of temperature, wind, pressure, height, and relative humidity. 7 Days forecast at one-degree gridded output is produced at the intervals of 6 hours.
  • The Global Environmental Multiscale Model (GEM), often known as the CMC model in North America, is an integrated forecasting and data assimilation system developed in the Recherche en Prévision Numérique (RPN), Meteorological Research Branch (MRB), and the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC). The numerical model outputs are available at a horizontal resolution of 1o for 7 days.

3 Days Forecast

    Description

  • The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is a next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting applications. It features two dynamical cores, a data assimilation system, and a software architecture supporting parallel computation and system extensibility. The model serves a wide range of meteorological applications across scales from tens of meters to thousands of kilometers. This model is being simulated at spatial resolution of 5Km for a period of 72 hours.
  • The ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic model (ICON) is the new global numerical weather prediction model by DWD. It became operational on 2015-01-20, replacing the previous operational global model, GME. The ICON modelling system as a whole is developed jointly by DWD and the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany (MPI-M). The model is run at spatial resolution of 13Km for a period of 72 hours.
  • Global Spectral Model (GSM1705) is developed by Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Japan with Spectral triangular 959 (TL959), reduced Gaussian grid system, roughly equivalent to a horizental resolution of 20 km (0.1875˚ × 0.1875˚).Its products are available for a period of 0-72 hours.
